When I heard the creaking of the sliding door, I slowly turned around. It was no one other than my family and friends, precious people in my life. The garden couldn’t have been a more magical place with fairy lights twinkling overhead and the sweet scent of jasmine in the air.
I could see them all being happy: my best friend’s goofy lopsided smile and the eagerness of my little brother wanting to have a big slice from the cake.
They all wished me „happy birthday” one by one and then, my mother brought the most beautiful cake I’ve ever had, with ornaments of berries and raspberries that contrasted with the dark brown of the chocolate.
As they were all singing and celebrating me, I spotted him in the back of the crowd, staring at me with that unreadable look longer than expected. The one that always got on my nerves and made me laugh at the same time. I felt a mixture of feelings for him: annoyance at his presence and a slight nervousness, but one was for sure, I didn’t hate him. I couldn’t, not when he always remembered the small things.
The song ended and I blew the candles while making a wish. Before I could open my eyes, a firm hand cupped the back of my head and shoved my face into the cake. I spun around to see him with a pleased smug smile on his face, proud of what he had achieved.
It didn’t take long for everyone to realize that I softly pressed my lips to his and they were all in pure shock. They knew us under the name of sworn enemies.
